Moving with Pets

Travelling with pets can be a pleasure or a nightmare. A little thought and a few simple precautions can make all the difference so it is best to plan your trip carefully.

Cats and dogs

It is more common for dogs to be travelling companions than cats but both can be accustomed to and even enjoy journeys. Here a few tips to help you with travelling your cats or dogs in your car.
  • Animals can get car sick and will need frequent stops along the way. If you are aware that your animal is prone to becoming stressed or restless during journeys, it is advisable to seek advice from your vet. A mild sedation may be required to keep him/her calm.
  • Do not feed your pet several hours before travelling but you can allow drinking up to and during the journey.
  • Ensure that your pet has a comfortable bed with absorbent newspaper underneath. Also make sure there is adequate ventilation.
  • If your journey will be long, choose a cat carrier that is large enough to hold a small litter tray and a secured water bowl.
  • Avoid letting your cat out of the carrier. If you must, ensure that the car doors and windows are closed to prevent escape.
  • When you move into your new home try and keep your cats indoors for approximately one month before gradually allowing him/her out.
  • Have a tag made with your name, new phone number and mobile number to put on his/her collar for the day of the move. This will increase the chance of finding your pet should they go missing.

Smaller animals

Hamsters, birds and other small animals can easily be transported in your car. To help keep the animals calm and quiet, cover cages with a cloth. Also make sure they have food and water available.
